Hope Will Light The Way

I am a dance teacher at a charter school in Boston and was so shocked and saddened to hear the news. I wrote this poem in hopes of bringing some positivity to a very desperate time.

Today I took a field trip mom, to the most beautiful of places..
The ride was rough but I found comfort,
In seeing many familiar faces.

At first I thought they'd leave without me,
And I'd be left there all alone,
So I closed my eyes and wished and wished,
That I could just go home.

When I opened my eyes,
It was the strangest thing,
There were no windows, walls, or doors,
It wasn't our house, or like any place
That I had ever been before.

But I knew that I belonged here,
That I was happy, loved, and safe,
I asked the man in charge if he knew,
How long my class would stay at this place?

"Sir, if me and my friends behave,
Can we keep playing together?"
He laughed, then smiled,
Said, "We're in no rush.",
If you want, you can stay forever.

We joined hands, jumped up and down,
And screamed, so excited at the thought,
Then all of a sudden, I got really sad,
I had remembered what I had forgot.

This morning before leaving for school,
I wanted to show you something neat,
I can tie my shoes now- I practiced,
Now I'll never trip over my feet!

See- we don't have to wear shoes here,
In fact, we don't even walk, we fly,
But I know you would have been so proud,
At how quickly I learned to tie.

I wanted to say hello and I love you,
So I'm writing you this letter,
I know you had a horrible day,
Just know that it will get better.

I like that I can visit you and dad,
Whenever I want to,
I've decided I'm going to stay for good,
If that's okay with you?

This man has been so kind to us,
And showed us so many things,
So when he asked me to be a special helper,
And presented me with wings..

I said, "Yes", and gladly,
Accepted my honorable role,
As protector of Sandy Hook Elementary,
And as guardian of all living souls.

I heard a bark, and turned my head,
And sitting there beside me,
Was Sparky, can you believe it, he's here!
It's him, it's really Sparky!

You told me on the day that he went away,
That one day I'd see him again,
That it would be the best feeling in the world,
To be back with my best friend.

And it would be in a place called Heaven-
Well, I think that's where I am,
You were right about everything,
And I'll show you when I can!

But this man says it might be a while,
There's such a long long line,
He tells me to look over you,
Because it's not yet your time.

Give dad a big hug for me,
I'm blowing kisses too,
Until the day you're here with me,
Know that I'll always be with you.
