Newtown Wins 10U New England Championship

The Newtown Renegades went undefeated in the Cal Ripken 10U New England Regional Tournament at Ricci Field in Cranston, RI to claim the championship and a trip to the World Series in Ocala, Florida.


Newtown 16, Vermont 6 (Saturday, July 20)
In the first round of the tournament, the Newtown Renegades jumped out to an early lead over Hartford, VT, scoring 15 runs in the first three innings. The Renegades brought in seven runs in the first inning behind RBI singles from Jared Dunn and Luke Galer and RBI doubleas from Josh Taylor, John Godino, Jack Street, and Dillon Robinson. The second inning saw an RBI double from Connor Haywood and a two-run home run from Jared Dunn, who racked up four RBIs on three hits for the Renegades.

Newtown 8, Berwick 5 (Sunday, July 21)
In the second round of the tournament, Berwick, ME jumped out to an early lead, but was unable to hold on in the 8-5 loss to the Newtown Renegades.Berwick grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Renegades were quick to respond with a two-run single from Josh Taylor. Berwick tied the game in the second, but that was no match for the Renegades who held the lead after scoring three runs in the fourth on an RBI double from Matt Bradbury and an RBI single from CJ Demers. The Renegades tacked on another two runs in the fifth. A single by Jared Dunn ignited the offense, which scored Connor Haywood. That was followed up by a single from Jack Street that scored Liam Murphy. The Renegades’ offense was sparked by Matt Bradbury and Jack Street, who teamed up for five hits and two RBIs. Joey Rios shut down Berwick on the mound – allowing just two hits and one earned run while giving up no walks and striking out six over four innings.

Newtown 11, Seacoast 9 (Tuesday, July 24)
In the winners’ bracket final, the Newtown Renegades and Seacoast, NH traded runs for most of the contest, leading to four lead changes in the game, but the Renegades pulled out the 11-9 win. In the top of the first, the Renegades grabbed an early 4-0 lead on an RBI double from Connor Haywood that scored CJ Demers and a towering three-run home run from Jared Dunn that scored Joey Rios and Connor Haywood. The Renegades scored two more in the second inning on an RBI double from Joey Rios that scored CJ Demers and a sac fly from Connor Haywood that scored Matt Bradbury. With Seacoast up 9-8 in the top of sixth inning, Josh Taylor blasted a three-run home run that scored Connor Haywood and Jared Dunn to give the Renegades the lead. Rios took the mound in the bottom of the sixth to shut down Seacoast and secure the win.

Newtown 8, Dedham 7 (Saturday, July 27)
In a championship game that saw five lead changes, the Newtown Renegades came from behind to beat Dedham, MA 8-7. Joey Rios racked up four RBIs on three hits for the Renegades, including a single, a double, and a two run home run. Dedham managed just two hits off of Rios who allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out five during three innings of work on the mound. Dedham jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Renegades scored in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Jared Dunn. The Renegades scored three in the third inning behind a two-run home run from Joey Rios that scored Matthew Bradbury, and plated another three in the fourth inning. With the score tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth, Josh Taylor drew a walk. Jack Street brought him – and the winning run – home on an RBI double.
