Sandy Hook School 3rd and 4th Graders Focus on Community Service

Sandy Hook School’s Project Eagle community service group was recognized for their work during the 2011-2012 school year at an awards assembly on Monday morning.

Together, the group of 28 students led projects including a Book Drive to replenish the classroom shelves at Sandy Hook School, the creation of original works of art for Danbury Hospital, Earth Day recycling drives, a Lego collection for Danbury’s Family and Children’s Aid Center, a student concert for the Masonicare residents, cleaning up the Pole Bridge Preserve with the Newtown Trails group, collecting items for needy children that were distributed through Operation Christmas Child, and holiday gifts for a local Women's Shelter.

Individually, Project Eagle students embarked on efforts to raise money for the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital through a bake sale and for the Special Olympics through a Penguin Plunge, collect shoes for a local drive, gather equipment at Newtown Baseball's Opening Day for Pitch In For Baseball, collect donations for the FAITH Food Pantry, gather winter hats and gloves for the Newtown Social Services annual basket program, make crafts with seniors for Mardi Gras, pick up trash along local roads, support freerice.com, participate in Locks for Love, promote a free hockey day for youth, donate toys to the Salvation Army, and provide dental supplies for the troops.
