Diamond Notes: Renegades win District 5 Championship
Newtown defeats Southbury, advances to 9U State Tournament
The Renegades won the 9U District 5 Championship on Wednesday night with an 8-5 win over Southbury. This was the team’s third straight win in the double elimination tournament. The Renegades beat Oxford 14-2 and Southbury 12-8 in first and second round games.
Southbury started the game with 2 runs in the first inning, and added 3 more in the second. The Renegades came back with 3 runs in the first inning and 2 more in the second to tie the game at 5-5. In the bottom of the third inning, Newtown tacked on another 3 runs to take an 8-5 lead. Strong pitching and defense held Southbury scoreless the rest of the game.
Connor Haywood and Joey Rios each doubled for the Renegades. CJ Demers went 3 for 3 and made some sharp plays at short. John Godino took the mound in the third inning in relief of starter Josh Taylor. Godino pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 2. Rios took the mound in the sixth inning. With 2 outs and 2 runners on, he struck out the final Southbury batter to end the game.

The Renegades now advance to the Cal Ripken 9U Connecticut State Tournament.
