Diamond Notes: Newtown's 9s take to Liberty Field

Weekend games saw close match-ups and strong pitching.

Newtown Baseball Minors AA (9s)

McGuire's Ale House Brewers 7, Haywood Insurance Marines 5

The Brewers jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held off a late rally from the Marines for the victory. For the Brewers, Shaine Luzietti, Aidan Finnegan, Jake Pare and Josh Taylor combined for four scoreless innings.  Tristan Andrew came in relief to hold off the Marines in the last inning.  Offensively the Brewers were led by Shaine Luzietti, Brett Melchionno and Josh Taylor with two hits each. The Marines got strong pitching from Tom Tavar, Joey Rios, Andrew Godfrey and Connor Haywood holding the Brewers scoreless for four innings.  At the plate the Connor Haywood and Anthony Dorazio led the way with two hits each.

Mobil 1 Drillers 11, Big Dawgs 10

The Drillers defeated the Big Dawgs in thrilling comeback fashion.  Down by six runs late in the game, the drillers closed the deficit to one going into the last inning and scored two runs for the exciting walk-off win.  Cole Morelli pitched two strong innings of relief while hitting standouts Jared Dunn, Robbie Hetzer, and Eamon Doherty led the offense en route to the 11-10 win. The Big Dawgs were led on offense by Jake Dandrea with two RBIs and two hits, Matthew Bradbury with 2 RBIs and two hits, two runs scored by Luke Hannan and Jack Street, and Harrison Hermes reached base twice.

Haywood Insurance Marines 9, Impact Men in Black 7

The Marines were down 7-3 to the Men in Black going into the 5th inning when they scored two runs and then added four runs in the 6th to rally to a 9-7 lead. Andrew Godfrey drove in two runs and Connor Haywood had clutch hit driving in two runs to tie the game in the 6th. Will Swift and Daniel Pond pitched well in relief of Thomas Tavar. Joey Rios pitched two scoreless innings in relief to seal the win.

Mobil 1 Drillers 15, Impact Men in Black 2

The Drillers were hitting on all cylinders as they cruised to a 15-2 win over the Men in Black.  Leading the team with outstanding pitching performances were CJ Giacin and Patrick Boyle. Reagin Gallagher, CJ Demers and Stephen Dooley paced the offensive onslaught. 

McGuire’s Ale House Brewers 9, Big Dawgs 9

On the hill for the Brewers, Tristan Andrew, Jake Pare and Josh Taylor combined for four scoreless innings of work. For the Big Dawgs, Nick Fischer and Jack Street threw three scoreless innings and had seven strikeouts.  Matt Bradbury made a great catch in left center and doubled up the Brewers to end a bases loaded scoring threat in the 4th inning.  Offensively the Brewers had big hits from Jake Pare with a double in the 2nd inning, Josh Taylor with a triple and a double, and Kyle Reilley with a key two out RBI single.  The Big Dawgs were paced offensively by Luke Hannan who finished the game with three hits, Jack Street with two hits and Sean Roche with an RBI double.
