Newtown Korean War Vet to Earn His Medals

More than 50 years after the Korean war ended, one Newtown veteran will finally get the thanks he deserves.

Rep. Elizabeth Esty will present Stanley Polcyn with four medals honoring his service in the 1950-1952 conflict at an Edmond Town Hall ceremony entitled "Serving Those Who Served," according to a release from her office.

After his grandchildren interviewed him for a school project, Polcyn contacted Esty's office about the medals. He had joined the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1948 and served in active duty as a flight engineer throughout the conflict.

"I feel incredibly honored that my office was able to help secure the military awards that Mr. Polcyn earned serving our country," said Esty in a statement released by her office. "Most of all, I’m grateful to Mr. Polcyn for his service, and I am glad he will be able to share this legacy with his grandchildren."

Polcyn will be awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the 50th Anniversary Korean War Service Medal 5:30 Thursday at Edmond Town Hall.
