Buddha Bash Concert Saturday Benefits REACH Newtown

What do you get when you mix bands, bikers, barbecue and Buddha? The First Annual Buddha Bash, of course!

Big Buddha Cigar Lounge owner Bryan Roth hopes to use his business for the benefit of local charities. Roth, along with Adam Carley, Executive Director of REACH Newtown, organized a one-day music festival as a way to raise funds for the non-profit.

The mission of REACH is "promote a sense of compassion, empathy, integrity, and social accountability among our children."

Roth said, "We chose REACH as the charity for this benefit because of the positive impact they have in our community. We have two young kids in Newtown schools so this is a great way to give back."

Roth opened Big Buddha Cigar Lounge in February of 2011 and has planned many events for local charities over the past few years. Saturday's event, the First Annual Buddha Bash, promises to bring fun for everyone.

Beginning at 2:00 p.m., the mini music fest kicks off with 7 local bands, a dunk tank, games for kids, barbecue and more. The event will be held in the back of Big Buddha's 6-acre property at 27 Hawleyville Road in Newtown.

The entry fee is $20 per person which includes entertainment and one free cigar for non-members. Big Buddha members will receive two free cigars.  All proceeds go to benefit REACH Newtown. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and chairs and bikers are welcome.

About REACH Newtown

The origins of REACH stretch back to the fall of 2010 when Adam Carley and a small group of educators set out to support at-risk children at an individual level with a network that connects home, school, and community.

That vision became a reality with the creation of the PEAK (Promoting Excellence in All Kids) organization. Since that time, PEAK has evolved into a sustainable and effective model for at-risk kids from 4th grade through high school.

The success of PEAK led to the larger initiative known today as REACH to encompass and support all kids in the greater Newtown and Danbury areas with one-to-one mentoring, afterschool activities (sports, wellness, and fine arts), and expeditionary learning opportunities.

While REACH is honored to serve our hometown community of Newtown, we are not an organization that was established in response to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. As such, we believe it is important to remain funded through grants and fundraising initiatives outside of Newtown so that all response funds generated after December 2012 can rightfully go to the families, schools, and organizations that need them most.
