State Elected Officials Holding Newtown Food Drive

State Sen. John McKinney (R-28) and Reps. Mitch Bolinsky, DebraLee Hovey and Dan Carter will team with the Newtown Social Services Department in January for a food drive to help Newtown's neediest families.

"The timing couldn’t be better," said Bolinsky. "While so many of us are reflecting on our blessings this time of year, others among us are not as fortunate."

Newtown Social Services officials told Patch 2013 has been one of the toughest years in recent memory for Newtown families. The department provided toys and gifts to 81 local families. The department operates the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program, Operation Fuel, Renters Rebate and the Salvation Army Emergency Food Pantry.

The department has a special need for food donations during the winter months, officials say.

"During the colder months it’s important to remember those less fortunate, and to give what we can to make their lives a little easier," Hovey said. "I'm honored to join my colleagues and Newtown Social Services to continue a tradition of collecting and distributing food to those in need and urge everyone to donate whatever amount they can spare. Even a small donation means a lot to a family with less."

Donation boxes will be available during the month of January at the Newtown Municipal Center, Edmond Town Hall and C.H. Booth Library. Monetary donations can also be made to Newtown Social Services at 203-270-4330.
