Golf Outing Raises $50K for Sandy Hook Memorial

The following is a release from Shemin Nurseries.

Proceeds from the Shemin Nurseries annual benefit golf outing have been donated toward the building of a permanent memorial for Sandy Hook School and the Newtown community.

The total funds raised at the golf outing were $50,000, and a check for this amount was presented this month to the town’s finance director. Shemin customers, suppliers and employees worked tirelessly and played joyfully to raise these funds. Many Shemin suppliers had already committed donating materials for the memorial, such as paving stones, lighting, etc., but funds were still necessary for the actual labor to build the permanent space.

Keynote speaker and Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra spoke to a packed room, and received a standing ovation for her wonderful words of thanks and encouragement.

Shemin hosts a benefit golf outing every year, and has typically donated funds to Habitat for Humanity—over $300,000 to date—in addition to committing materials and labor to these building projects. The scope of the tragedy at Sandy Hook necessitated a change of direction for this year’s fundraiser. Many Shemin employees are from the area, and were deeply impacted by the events of last December. The Town of Newtown has committed to building a memorial, and Shemin is dedicated to this cause. We look forward to a permanent space of healing and reflection for the entire community.
