Shooting Prompts Religious Leaders to Host Special Prayer Services

If you know of one happening nearby, please share details in the attached comments section.

In light of the heartbreaking tragedy unfolding at Sandy Hook Elementary School, several local religious organizations plan to host services Friday night (Dec. 14).

Details are as follows:

  • Newtown Congregational Church will hold a prayer service at 7 p.m. Officials there said an interfaith gathering is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 16) at Newtown High School.
  • Newtown United Methodist Church will hold a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday (Dec. 14). All are welcome to attend. Rev. Sue Klein said she and other parish leaders "automatically planned" the gathering after hearing the news. Many of the church's members have students who attend the school.
  • St. Rose of Lima will host a Catholic Mass at 7 p.m. Friday (Dec. 14). All are welcome to attend.

Prayer in time of tragedy, by Father Mychal Judge,
'the Saint of 9/11' God is present, loving, smiling, having received our loved ones. They are in His presence, illumed by His smile and warmed by His love. His kingdom is enriched this day, so enriched by so many beautiful souls. So much beauty. Our world is empty without them. Our hearts are broken, our sadness immense, our tears so abundant. We live our sorrow together. We need You, Lord. Please come and touch us. Fill us with courage. Calm our discomfort. Give us signs of Your presence. We ask You, we beg You: come.

There are no words one can say to the grieving families and friends of those lost. I hope they are feeling the love and prayers coming to all of them from all over the country. My family lives in MA and they are at a vigil tonight. My cousin from GA said they are praying and keeping them in their thoughts. I to have prayed since I heard and can only add to other comments that our Creator never meant for this type of thing to happen. Satan is real and he is doing everything he can to turn people against the Lord. I pray someday God is brought back into people's lives, in schools, the workplace, public places and mostly in their hearts. God Bless those lost and those who will have to find a way to live on without them! Communities are helping in any way they can & hopefully some people's faith will be restored in their fellow man instead of destroyed by these horrific and senseless acts of violence.
the steward December 16, 2012 at 12:12 am
the church of all does not have a physical location nor any followers (allism: whatever you believe is true is true for you; do unto all love, and all the loveth increase). however i the steward live in newtown, ct. for any atheists, agnostics, and any and all others that don't have a place to go but want one/need one, i guess the congregation of any and all people that want can come to the big y parking lot to talk, grieve, help each other... just be not alone for an hour... let's say 9pm. i'll wait around for half an hour in the center of the parking lot. no one shows, it's okay. peace and love to all
Fr. Gabriel Rochelle December 16, 2012 at 04:41 am

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
