The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps issued the following statement late Friday night:

"The tragedy that occurred today in Sandy Hook has affected the entire Newtown community in a profound way. As EMS providers and members of this community, we too are affected by this devastating event. At this time, we ask that everyone will respect the privacy of our community as we grieve the loss of our friends and neighbors. Please keep the victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers, especially during this holiday season."

"Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded in full force today both on-scene and at our garage with extensive support provided by surrounding town EMS agencies. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the outpouring of assistance from our brothers and sisters in the emergency medical services, and all other emergency personnel."
