Newtown Parent: NRA 'Playing to People's Fears'

During a press conference Friday, the NRA laid out a proposal that included installing armed security officials in every U.S. school.

Asked for a reaction to Friday’s statement from the NRA that on-site armed security officials should be installed in every American school by next month, a grassroots organization out of Newtown said its core mission remains unchanged.

“Newtown United stands with the children, the teachers, the community, and the families touched by the massacre of innocent lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14,” Rob Cox, a spokesperson for Newtown United, told Patch in an email.

“We are united with the country to drive national efforts to turn the tide on gun violence,” Cox continued. “We are dedicated to ensuring the senseless act of violence that occurred in Newtown is never repeated.”

The National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people last week in Sandy Hook and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools.

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

The statements came about 90 minutes after Newtown and much of the nation observed a moment of silence for the 20 schoolchildren and six adults killed during the Dec. 14 shooting. It also came at a time when voices for gun control are steadily rising. On Friday morning before the press conference, President Obama released a video citing a petition by hundreds of thousands of Americans calling for swift action.

LaPierre also railed against violent video games, accusing the media of selling "violence against its own people" through violent video games, music videos and "blood-soaked" films. He did not take questions from reporters, and did not acknowledge the protesters.

Suzy DeYoung, a parent coach and Newtown resident for nine years who has three children, said LaPierre was playing to people’s fears.

“People are much smarter than this,” DeYoung said. “He is saying we need to be protected from guns by more guns. This lack of logic speaks for itself, and I truly believe the response you are about to see from parents all around the world will offer better commentary than I ever could."

Joanna Zachos, a mother in Sandy Hook, said that while she supports an increase in gun control and personally does not believe in guns at all, that the larger problem goes "way beyond that."

"The problem we have is our immunity to violence as a society as a whole," she said. "Violent video games, violent movies, addiction to horror films. We've developed immunity to violence and violent images."

Zachos said she worried about taking her children to the mall during Halloween because they'd be exposed to troubling images. And she said that after Friday's shooting, she’d be even more careful.

"Going forward, I feel I'm going to have ask people, 'Do you have a gun?' before we go for a playdate," she said.

"We have police to protect this community,” she said. “If someone wants to keep something, one small thing that will make them feel safe, that's their prerogative. But there's no need for semi-automatic weapons at home. None. Absolutely none."

Patch Editor John Ness contributed to this report.

Gun licenses must be renewed every three years and permits are given only for personal use, not for business in the firearms sale while holders for self-defense purposes may own only one handgun, and may purchase a maximum of fifty rounds a year, except for those shot at firing ranges. <---I thought they only got 50? lol

Thank you Marcus for pointing this out it is a big help. Would you kindly discuss Israel's success to The Boys In Your Band.

While Marcus pulled his video, if anybody was interested in still seeing a thumbnail image of him shooting off his submachine gun, just go to Bing and do a search under video for "Machine Gun Shoot Female 5-23-2009 My MP5SD2" That was the name of the file and they maintain the thumbnail image.

Pointing out that you keep losing in the Courts?
Mark Osinoff December 27, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Hey folks lets just take what we learned through this research and walk Marcus is an ass who like a wind up toy will go untill he is rewound. I read the article too Marcus they did something and you will always have folks on our side who's only pupose is safety. You just love to engage and listen to yourself, folks lets stop winding him up. Checkmate Marcus, you accomplished nothing.
Marcus Poulin December 27, 2012 at 11:42 PM
Yeah the safety afforded by Chicago's gun control laws with 487 murders this year and 2000 shootings. Working REAL good. Checkmate Fool. "Moore v. Madigan, 7th Circuit. A long and well-thought out opinion, I'm only partway through, but it strikes down Illinois' general ban on carrying open or concealed, and stays its mandate 180 days so the legislature can try to come up with something constitutional. The theme of the opinion is largely, "don't try to re-argue Heller, you lost that one, and we're going to apply it honestly." The author is Judge Posner, who is no friend of the Second Amendment, but does believe in following precedent." You lost again Mark and in the courts again this time.
Marcus Poulin December 27, 2012 at 11:42 PM
You mean a gang member like you Watts are unable to own guns from being a felon?
Mark Osinoff December 27, 2012 at 11:43 PM
Your right again. They stay in the firing ranges. Not at their homes. Go back to your search engine on google. Can you live at home with 50 rounds a year.
JED December 27, 2012 at 11:44 PM
Lies? I think not. P3 answered that question, That this was quoted from the Israeli site must have you stewing to spin another direction. You know if we had the laws for gun ownership that Israel has, I would whole heartedly support those laws. How ironic that those laws you are espousing would deny you your semi-automatics. Now, our little blog leech from WA state- why are you here? It is certainly not to try to educate or to garner support for your side because of your pushy, belligerent manner that has alienated all but the most rabid gun owner. You do not teach - you attack with a RPG! Is this a method to get another chapter for your book? Are you gathering "quotes" from a community that has experienced an extreme shock to all that has been held dear to go into your book to show "ignorance" in your eyes? I call for all to ignore, Marcus - do not answer, respond to any of his post from this time forward as it fuels his ego. He no longer exist for me and I hope you follow suit. We have outed him for what he is and we have won.
Marcus Poulin December 27, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Outed as what Judy? I think you lost as you KEEP losing in the courts but you never seem to be able to mention that lol.
Marcus Poulin December 27, 2012 at 11:49 PM
"While Marcus pulled his video, if anybody was interested in still seeing a thumbnail image of him shooting off his submachine gun, just go to Bing and do a search under video for "Machine Gun Shoot Female 5-23-2009 My MP5SD2" Watts I might remind you that Fernan is NOT female. Do you even know how to spell?
Watts December 27, 2012 at 11:56 PM
Go back and look at how you listed the video. That is a copy and paste of how you entered it on youtube. And don't forget, I still have a copy of it ;) That is why I asked people to enter it exactly as you had misspelled it, because that is the only way to get the image to come up. As if we thought that this couldn't get any funnier, here you criticize me for your own spelling error.
Mark Osinoff December 27, 2012 at 11:57 PM
No Marcus verses Us. We have proven there are better ways to make this Country safer that's all we need. We know it will be a battle but it will take time hopefully not more innocent lives. If your brain could catch up to your finger for your sake I hope you think things through next time before you post but I doubt it. Sick mindset Markie.

Now, CT people - we can tighten the CT laws but do we want to simply stop mass shootings? OR are we trying to substantially lower the gun related death rate? I am for a lower gun death rate...... Our ban was different than the Federal ban. We did not restrict the ammo while the Fed ban did. That is a loop hole we can close or tighten. We need to look at what our gun laws say, how public support can make CT safer. We can make our state safer but it will take the people of CT advocating for change and being vocal. There is a new org _ "A million Moms against guns" After the success of MADD and the Amber alerts instigated by mothers who have HAD IT -- I would be very afraid Marcus.......the mothers are now at war with narrow minded rambos killing their children!

Ladies and Gentlemen, my work here is done. I am taking Mark's recommendation that we now leave Marcus alone in this darkening room. Alone with his empty world of cold metal and man boobs. A life where his own gun obsession has (by his own admission) replaced any chance of affections from the fairer sex. If your goal was to compete to see who would be the last man standing in this darkened corner of the world, then I wish you luck, but I have to bid adieu as well. All that I would ask is that you please seek some therapy, because you would appear to be the text book psychotic normally being discussed in these situations.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Million_Mom_March Judy it didn't work too well last time now did it? lol Even though the 2000 march may have approached the 1 million mark when events in other cities were taken into account, the enthusiasm didn't last long. According to a Reuters account of the 2001 Million Mom March event, barely 200 people showed up for the Washington rally.

A reminder: http://newtown.patch.com/blog_posts/my-beautiful-town-6618b80b#video-12682159 Out towns, our children are worth fighting for - immortality is worth fighting for and that is only through the genetic makeup of your children. Let them die and civilization dies and has no meaning. All just battles are not easy battles. We can make a step forward but we must all become involved. Thinking the other person will act for us is a cop out. I have written the President and my CT representatives. I will continue to write them. THIS we can do!
Mark Osinoff December 28, 2012 at 12:46 AM
That's great Judy after these past tragedies you will get a great deal of support. MADD made the streets safer for my children I know you will get more support than Ever. Use what Isreal has done with success times Have changed and you will have a great deal of supporters. The Best of Luck.
JED December 28, 2012 at 01:55 AM
This is where we differ marcus. WE are the people and CHANGE can happen but I need more voices than just mine. I believe we can make a difference. Our voices must be made known. CT can be the start. Night all and known we can do this,
Marcus Poulin December 28, 2012 at 03:04 AM
Yet Judy your side has attempted the same failed legislative policies for the last 44 years with utter failure. Don't you see the lack of logic in that mindset? Well this debate seems to be ending but nevertheless take care.
Marcus Poulin December 28, 2012 at 03:11 AM
Mark as with all the recent cases I have posted your side has profoundly lost. And for the rest of this debate my repost of Christopher's quote stands!
Mark Osinoff December 28, 2012 at 03:43 AM
If you think I'm starting this over after you big blunder your nuts. Bet your Boys love your little fall, thought you knew it all, lol
Marcus Poulin December 28, 2012 at 04:26 AM
You ought to love losing then. Now watch the Democrats fail and lose in Congress they are already admitting they are going to. Lol

Good afternoon to my American mates here who are attempting to have a rational debate here regarding the need to reform Americas' gun laws. Well down here in Oz we have again got thru another day with no mass shootings . Infact none since 1996 when the Oz govt banned the sale of automatic weapons. No firemen massacred , no kids hurt by the end of a semi automatic. Infact the biggest news here was a surfer attacked by a shark....the surfer survived by the way ...... Anyway apart from the 'Poulin factor" where the spin dont stop and bullshit reigns supreme I've quite enjoyed this debate on here. Poulin you like to use big words to big note yourself....here is an Aussie word for you .........WANKER..! Anyway now I've disposed of the Wanker there was an intersting article in an Aussie newspaper today regarding this debate . Basically it said out of a population of 312 million the NRA has 4 million members , and 1 quarter of the US population is under 50 yrs of age and out of that figure only 50% vote. So my question is to everyone here apart from the Wanker. What is the chance of the Govt making it mandotory for every eligiable US citizen to vote on this issue ?
Marcus Poulin December 28, 2012 at 07:16 AM
We are not a Socialist country like OZ. We value fundamental rights. Even the House JB will not vote for another gun ban Fat Chance. Lol
JB 62 December 28, 2012 at 08:11 AM
Sorry Wanker. You disqaulified yoursef in my eyes from this debate when you couldnt pick from the 4 multiple choice answers I gave you when I asked the simple question ....... Why Oz has not had one massacre since 1996 when the Liberal Govt ( your equivanlent of the Republican party ) banned automatic weapons in 1996.
Marcus Poulin December 28, 2012 at 08:26 AM
We are not interested in government confiscation of our property for "The Greater Good" Every country is different. And am I calling you names? No. We have had 2000 shootings and 487 murders this year in Gun Free Chicago so maybe we aren't really interested in your social engineering... "Because I always think it's a sign of victory when they move on to the ad hominem"- Christopher Hitchens lol "disqaulified" <------not a word lol
Marcus Poulin December 28, 2012 at 08:40 AM
Here we have the MOST Anti-Gun Senator in the U.S. Senate “Look, I’m tired of us making speeches and not getting anything done,” Schumer says. “I’ve been around this thing a long time. In the late eighties, in the late nineties. There was almost a coup in the NRA! Before that, it was like the AAA.” Schumer does not sound optimistic about passing gun-control bills with real teeth. He still believes the NRA is too powerful a force to convince enough legislators to pass a serious gun-control bill. “We might surprise ourselves,” he says. “I think it’s going to be hard.” Even he doesn't think much will get passed and he wrote the bill for the last major gun ban. So Fat Chance you people that think it is going to happen. lol http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2012/12/democrats-need-to-like-gun-lovers.html At least we have 1st and 2nd Amendment RIghts in this country unlike the Socialist Commonwealth
