Competition 101

Since we have been talking about competitions a lot recently I wanted to compile a list of things every CrossFitter should know going into their first competition. The thought of getting out there and competing in front of a crowd can be intimidating, but with these tips and tricks hopefully you can breathe a little easier :)

1. Be sure you understand the necessary weight and movement standards set by the competition. Each and every competition will have a set of standards they expect you to meet for each division, whether it be RX or scaled. Evaluate yourself and be sure that you meet these standards! (Not sure if you are there yet? ASK US!) This will help you figure out which division is right for you, as well as getting an overall understanding of what you will be doing for the competition.

2. If you are doing a team/partner competition, be sure to get in a regular practice with your teammate(s). By going over your strengths and weaknesses you can assess who will do what during each WOD.. which brings me to my next point

3. WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSES! You won’t get better at rowing if you do pullups right? So get used to being uncomfortable. If you know that a competition has a particular move that you are not proficient in then PRACTICE THAT MOVEMENT. Adrenaline will only do so much for you the day of the competition, without practice you will never truly progress.

4. Practice scaled down versions of the WOD’s. Have a 10 minute AMRAP planned for WOD 1? Do a five minute version and see how you fair. Have 8 minutes to find your max hang squat snatch? Take some time to test your 1 rep so you know how to build come the big day. By taking the time to practice you know where your strengths and weaknesses lie within the sequence, so you know what your body is capable of going harder on and what you may need to back off on/leave more time for.

5. Train like an athlete.. don’t go balls to the wall for 4 weeks straight without a day off to train for a competition. You WILL hurt yourself and then you dropped money and spent all that time training for nothing. Be smart and SAFE.

6. HAVE FUN. It’s just another WOD, its just another workout.. its just another day to pass out on the floor and think to yourself wow.. I can’t believe I’ve gotten this far..
