Shays: Fiscally Conservative Paul Ryan a Great Pick

Former Congressman Christopher Shays, Republican candidate for United States Senate, applauds Governor Romney's pick of Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate.

Today Christopher Shays, Republican candidate for United States Senate, released a statement applauding Governor Romney's pick of Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate.

"Governor Romney could not have made a better choice for his running mate than his decision to name my friend and former colleague, Congressman Paul Ryan.

Paul will be a Vice President all America can be proud of.

Congressman Paul Ryan and I served together on the House Budget Committee for many years. Together we fought to cut wasteful government spending, to balance the federal budget, and help set the stage for years of economic growth.

Governor Romney said his choice of Congressman Paul Ryan is, 'another step forward to restore the promise of America', and I couldn’t agree more.

My sincerest congratulations to Paul Ryan, a man who has spent the past 14 years serving in Congress. He is an experienced leader, trying to restore fiscal sanity to Washington."

Murphy Man,
I am not certain what info you are looking for the source from? Please try to be more clear.

Norman,
Thanks for your imput. I joined this patch blog about 24 hours ago, and I honestly thought I would experience more right wing commentary from Fairfield County. But, I also assumed I would be able to read interesting, informed commentary. I have to say it's beyond disappointing! Norman assails the Bush White House for "7 plus trillion added to the national debt". If adding debt is something that people need to apply lipstick to, in order to hide the fact, then Norman, I think that you may need to go to the cosmetic store before it closes. 12/31/2001 BUSH $5,943,438,563,436 12/28/2007 BUSH $9,229,172,659,218 12/31/2008 BUSH $10,699,804,864,612 12/31/2011 OBAMA $15,125,898,976,397 Now, if you want to count the 12/31 issuance to Bush , who was at that point a lame duck President, and the actual disbursement of funds occurs in 2009 and was the famous Tarp money--then Bush still accumulated 4.75 trillion in 8 years , and included the 'costly wars." Obama, on the other hand saw 4.45 trillion in only 3 years ,even if we dont count the dec 31 2008 increase by the Democratic Congress. So , Norman, when you say debt is bad, and needs disguise, may I safely assume that you understand that 4.45 trillion over 3 years is not better than 4.75 trillion over 8 years? And therefore, since you are obviously unhappy with the issuance of debt, will not be voting for Mr Obama? At the very least, will you correct your numbers please? Karen

Karen you're throwing around alot of figures. I have one question for you. Is the Federal Reserve part of the Fedaeral Government?
karen lyons August 12, 2012 at 10:25 pm
Richard,
Why are you asking me that? Again, very disappointing level of discussion here. I expected more. I read the NY Times and Wall St Journal blogs, and people there have defined positions, but they do not resort nearly as much to outright distortion. This is Fairfield County, The best people here can come up with is accusing Bush of adding 7 trillion to the debt? Telling me that 4 numbers are too many figures to look at? Asking me if the Federal Reserve bank is part of our Federal Govt? Are you all trying to have a discussion? Or do you think spreading misinformation or ignorance to be a challenging endeavor? I give up on this forum. Terrible.
Richard Frascone August 12, 2012 at 10:35 pm
WOW I asked a simple question, and you give me a song and a dance. Let's try this again. Is the Federal Reserve part of the Federal Government?
Michael Gianfranceschi August 12, 2012 at 10:43 pm
why not, you bought into obama on faith, you didn't see his transcripts from school, (columbia, occidental, and harvard), how did get into those schools, how were they paid for??? says he's a Christian you take that on faith too even though his actions sometimes would make you think otherwise..LOL
Norman August 12, 2012 at 11:17 pm
Karen: I'm assuming you then approve of Ryan's record on voting for debt regardless of the numbers and by golly, he's a naked partisan when it comes to said debt-accumulation. Could you loan him some of your lipstick? I'm all out at this moment.
Garry T. August 12, 2012 at 11:17 pm
Mitt Romney to the Public: I wiil not show you my tax returns, just shut up and vote for me.
karen lyons August 12, 2012 at 11:25 pm
Norman
Do you realize you make absolutely no sense? The debt ceiling , if you remember was the contentious issue that occured last summer, that Democrats labeled Tea partiers as "obstructionists" over, when they did not want to vote for the debt increases. I am personally against our level of debt accumulation, so I am against anyone at this point, who decides to increase the debt load, without addressing out of control spending. Mr Obama was fervently for increasing the debt, calling people who threatened not to vote in favor as being tantamount to ruining this country. So, again, Norman, I am happy to set the record straight, but even with cold hard numbers are you really going to allow your statement to stand that Bush increased it 7 plus trillion? Thanks, karen
karen lyons August 12, 2012 at 11:27 pm
Richard,
If you dont know, the answer is "yes' the Federal Reserve (Bank) is an independent part of our Federal Government. Since you didnt know that, I hope you will not then try to explain something to me. As you have sufficiently proved your ignorance. Thanks, Karen
Richard Frascone August 12, 2012 at 11:59 pm
Gary this election comes down to one issue. The 1% verses the 99%. The KOCH BROTHERS, the tea-party, and the 1%. What a sorry situation. Have you seen the KOCH BROTHERS EXPOSED yet? Here's a trailer.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/08/romney-campaign-requested-several-years-of-tax-returns-of-vp-contenders/ "When asked why he does not put the criticism to rest and just release more of his tax returns, Romney has said that no matter how many he decided to make public, there will always be a call to give more. And while Romney’s own father, George Romney, released 12 years of tax returns during his bid for the presidency, the candidate today cites Sen. John McCain as the one who set the precedent to release just two years." ------------------------- http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/08/07/obama-should-release-his-college-transcripts/ President Obama to the public: I will not show you my college transcripts. Just shut up, read my books, give me more money since the Romney camp is smoking me on fundraising, and vote for me. I'm not done ruining America.

@karen lyons,
No. The Federal Reserve is in no way affiliated with The Executive, Judicial, or Legislative branches of our Federal Government, in any way. They are a private organization. http://www.monetary.org/is-the-federal-reserve-system-a-governmental-or-a-privately-controlled-organization/2008/02 So, yes, we have an organization that basically prints money for The Government and pretty much runs itself. Scary stuff, indeed. When Romney wins the Presidency, the first thing he should do is appoint Ron Paul as Chairman to the Fed. Bernanke would go down in flames.
Norman August 13, 2012 at 12:20 am
Unfortunately, the Patch code only allows a reply to a reply to an original post so the context is gone but effectively Karen says she's OK with Ryan's votes for Bush's out-of-control spending but, in true teabilly fashion, she finds votes with Obama in the White House to be reprehensible! Karen, this is why the teabillies are only a threat to the GOP: everyone else knows they are agenda-driven nutjobs! But I digress: if Shays truly thinks Ryan is "fiscally conservative" then we may need to burn all the dictionaries due to the fact that words have lost all meaning!

@William B,
Let's end this Ryan vs. Obama on Medicare cuts talking point right here and now. Please read to enjoy: "Well, you know ask the wealthy to pay a little bit more. Cut waste from the government. Reform Medicare. More than $300 billion in savings from Medicare. On top of the savings we’ve already achieved. You know I heard Mitt Romney deride the $700 billion cuts in Medicare that the president achieved through health care reform." --Stephanie Cutter on Face the Nation this morning. President Obama is so incensed that this young upstart Paul Ryan is smarter than him, that he is saying the Medicare tax cuts he (Obama) did are wonderful and newsworthy, but that Ryan's are evil and horrific. Someone bring some popcorn, I'll get the beer. This is going to be an amusing election cycle.
Steve Zur August 13, 2012 at 12:44 am
@Donald But President Obama released 10 yrs of tax returns....So? Obama and college transcripts is that all you got? Who cares? Voters want to know if Romney paid any taxes.
karen lyons August 13, 2012 at 12:49 am
Norman
I do not approve of Bush spending. Never said I did. May I ask if you find the truth to be important? Its a simple question.
Reyn Richard August 13, 2012 at 01:10 am
The release of Mitts tax returns is a very relevant issue since he basis his whole campaign on his business expertise. The fact that his net worth is 250 million plus makes this issue even important because it contrasts the difference in the tax code between the economic classes. Would the exposure of the truth be detrimental to Mitt?, well he thinks it would. Conversely I don't care what his college transcripts are as he is not running on his academic achievements. Likewise Obamas college
grades are hardly a relevant issue. We do know however from the little that has been released that he pays a smaller percentage of federal tax than most of the middle class work force. This begs for further examination.
karen lyons August 13, 2012 at 01:22 am
Steve and Reyn
So, you seem to believe what you say. But could you answer an honest question. If Mitt's taxes are released and it shows he paid 17% or 19 or 21% which level will it give you comfort to vote for him. May I suggest that under any scenario, you will not vote for him? If you are honest?
Steven DeVaux August 13, 2012 at 01:29 am
So where's Obama's birth certificate? Romney released his!
Roberta Shea August 13, 2012 at 01:38 am
Obama’s college transcripts – well, that’s a nice diversionary try. One doesn’t become the editor of The Harvard Law Review by merely walking by the building one day. Plenty of evidence out there; look for it. Sarah Palin never released her transcripts. I don’t remember anyone asking. Why would it be a requirement? Nobody could find any evidence though that she actually spent time in higher learning. My guess, (call me crazy) she didn’t.
Roberta Shea August 13, 2012 at 01:43 am
President Obama was pro-traditional marriage and, oh-no! He changed his mind. Is that a crime? I like it when people think, weight issues and show is that they are capable of being flexible. Look at where the previous occupant of the White House’s. “Stay the course” stance got us
Richard Frascone August 13, 2012 at 01:45 am
We have evidence that obama was born, he walks and talks. We don't have any evidence that mitt rob-me paid taxes. You can't win an election with doubt. Never mind, the KOCH BROTHERS and the tea-party are going to lose this election on their own. Even the "simple-folk" won't vote conservative. What about you?
Roberta Shea August 13, 2012 at 01:50 am
Does Obama have ties to the New Black Panther party? Remember what happened, when a recent VP candidate accused Obama of, “palling around with terrorists?” Romney and company pal around with the Koch Brothers. That is more frightening than science fiction.
Roberta Shea August 13, 2012 at 01:55 am
About the comment that we don’t seem to know what Obama is – if you trouble yourself to look into it, you’d find out. Or, you could jump onto the, “Birther, Obama is a Muslim” bandwagon and in your own words, “Drink the Kool-Aid.” His father was a Muslim, probably non-practicing, his mother was raised Christian and as an adult, she lost her faith in God. (Oh-the dreaded "A" word) Obama is an Episcopalian. (Not that it matters what his or anyone else’s religion, or lack of religion happens to be)
P.S: We know what Paul Ryan is...he thinks that he is a Catholic…wears it on his sleeve, but the Catholic Church is committed to caring for the poor and the elderly. If you asked them what Ryan is, they’d call him a Catholic that doesn’t get it. (You know what you could do with those vouchers, Paulie)

Aren't you aware of Romney & Marriott's tax evasion scheme? "(CNN) Marriott engaged in a series of complex and high-profile maneuvers, including "Son of Boss," a notoriously abusive prepackaged tax shelter that investment banks and accounting firms marketed to corporations such as Marriott. In this respect, Marriott was in the vanguard of a then-emerging corporate tax shelter bubble that substantially undermined the entire corporate tax system.
Son of Boss and its related shelters represented perhaps the largest tax avoidance scheme in history, costing the U.S. many billions in lost corporate tax revenues. In response, the government initiated legal challenges that resulted in complete disallowance of the losses claimed by Marriott and other corporations... ...In his key position as head of the board's audit committee, Romney was required under the securities laws and his fiduciary duties to review the transaction. In fact, it has been publicly reported that Romney was the Marriott Board member most acquainted with the transaction and to whom the other board members turned for advice. This makes sense because aggressive tax-driven financial engineering was a large part of what Romney (and Bain) did for a living. For these reasons, it is fair to hold him accountable for Marriott's spurious tax reporting...." http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/08/opinio...-romney-taxes/

Karen,
As someone fortunate enough to be in the upper 1% of income level I would expect him to be be paying taxes in the highest bracket of the IRS code. Whatever it was for that particular year. Thats the whole idea of tax brackets, Karen. Why have tax brackets when the super wealthy (Mitt) have ways to shelter themselves. How could it be that some with Mitts income only contributed the same rate as Joe the plummer? Isn't that unamerican? How long has this been going on with Mitt? Its all very relevant my friend, because its about accountability to the american people.

Karen - I don't think you'll be around for long on Patch. Your comments have become offensive and quite inappropriate.
Roberta Shea August 13, 2012 at 02:34 am
Flip-flop - yeah, I'll take it... if that’s what you want to call it. It was the Bush Administration, if I remember correctly that used the phrase in that context…the, “My way or the highway” bunch. (Sorry, I thought that this was a democracy) Only the narrow-minded and the frightened (no difference really) insist upon, "Staying the course." I can see the Conservatives at the dollar store now, buying flip-flops and getting ready to wave them at their Convention.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
