What Type of Business Does Newtown Need?

That was the question asked by someone wanting to open a business in Newtown. Here's what the community had to say. Have you weighed in yet?

If you could pick a new business for Newtown, what kind would you choose?

"Many folks are of the opinion that small business is the root structure for economic growth — I am one of them," a reader posted on the Newtown Patch Town Square.

The potential business owner shared two of their ideas (a marine sports store or a "warm, comfortable lounge from the era of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack" and wants to know what you think!

We posted the question on Newtown Patch's Facebook page and here are some of the answers.

What do you think? What kind of business do you think Newtown needs? What would you love to see in town?

Lauryn...The reason we don't use the temp rink is it's too small, not covered, and most importantly they don't allow hockey players.

I would love to see a simple, affordable, health food restaurant, (deli and bakery too?). Also with an environment friendly to showcase local music and art. Even a health food store would be nice. I find this missing in Newtown and surrounding towns.

Here's a crazy idea - how about a business park so we can increase the tax base and add high paying jobs instead of low wage retail, museum or ice rink jobs. Oh, maybe because companies are not moving to CT - they're moving out? Never mind.

We need to keep the retail to smaller sizes which encourages mom and pop shops. We also need our P & Z to zone specific areas where retail is limited to let's say no larger than any single store or business to be no more than 8,000 sq ft. and in other areas keep the store sizes even smaller.

I agree with the idea of an organic foods market but I would also love something like a Kohls - it would be perfect where the old Lexington Gardens used to be- out of view yet accessible. I also think Main Street could be a little more small-town commercial- some of the homes that are falling apart (do people even live there?) could be little boutiques and shops, ice cream parlors, similar to the feel of the Country Store.... Great for a summer stroll through town.
