Report: Connecticut Recession Worse Than Expected

New figures paint a clearer picture of just how hard the recession hit Connecticut

When the global economy worsened in 2007 and ushered in the Great Recession, we had no idea just how bad it was.

A new report from the Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis combed over the data and found that, "Connecticut’s Great Recession was more severe than we previously thought—and Connecticut was still contracting when the rest of the nation was beginning to recovery.”

The newly revised information from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics used in the reports means that the state, “has an even steeper hill to climb that we had thought.” There are now reportedly fewer jobs in Connecticut than in 1988.

When the Bureau of Labor Statistic first released information about the gross domestic product in Connecticut, their figures were much rosier than what was later realized. In the fourth quarter of 2009, the total value of Connecticut’s goods and services declined by $14.5 billion from $204.5 billion.

In light of the new information, the Center, based at the University of Connecticut, said it’s an, “absolute necessity for Connecticut to pursue aggressive policies and sustained investments to accelerate recovery and job creation.”

Malloy has the answer. Millions in tax breaks, also known as taxpayer dollars, for companies that do not need them. Continue to raise taxes and fees so the people that actually work and make the economy work continue to suffer. Finally, grow the welfare state so more and more people depend on government for their existence. Priceless.

It will all blow up for the State of Connecticut. There is no other possible outcome. The die has been cast. The only unknown is the timing.
The only question is what does Newtown need to do to avoid being dragged down with the State.

Ah yes. Academia has weighed in with the conclusion everyone else in the state already knew. Connecticut's recession was more severe than previously thought. Of course, they can't leave it at that. The propeller heads in UConn's "Center" go on to recommend "aggressive policies" and "sustained investment". One wonders whether they've been napping the past 4 years, while the Federal Government pursued aggressive policies and sustained investments in the form of the Stimulus Bill, which added about $1 trillion to baseline spending each fiscal year to no avail. Sigh.

Not shoveling $12MM into Hawley would be a good start.

Oh...I was just in town. What is up with the roads??? I have never seen them in such a state of disrepair THROUGHOUT town.

You spend months bitching about the town budget being high, now you complain because more money in not spent on road repair. Guess some people just need to whine.
Paul Alexander August 29, 2012 at 09:24 pm
Actually Sully, the axe I grind is HOW the money is spent. Try to keep up.

Stumbled across this gem recently... "The good news about this recession is that the abruptness of the fall has encouraged the kind of aggressive policy responses that will bring about a recovery".
& on the top right of the page it's asking me to "Join Michelle and tell Barak You're In" - where do I go to tell 'em I am most definetly OUT.

Didnt we just creat 33 more unemployed people last june right here in Newtown?
Judy Evans August 29, 2012 at 11:36 pm
Don't even address State or Federal issues. Until you address the problems in Newtown and work to correct the lack of transparency, over spending in the current administration, I don't feel you have much of a leg to stand on@!

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.

Norma has been spotted this morning at the intersection of Kenan and Currituck. The red leash isRead More still attached. She was trying to eat a dead squirrel on Currituck. Very skittish, but still in the neighborhood (yay). Please watch for her. My husband and sister-in-law (who first spotted her on Currituck this morning) were unable to get near her. She's in the woods, heading toward Butterfield. Her foster mom is on the scene now. Folks in the neighborhood, please watch for her and call 203-942-4008 if you see her.
Carol Chapman June 19, 2013 at 11:20 am
Carolee Mason (Newtown's Animal Control Officer) is watching her from her car at the moment, armedRead More with catfood to tempt her closer. The foster mom is on her way there again, this time with chicken, and Laura is on her way with hamburger. Problem is, this dog is VERY shy, skittish and quick to run away.
