Report: Connecticut Manufacturing Still Shrinking

Recovery in the manufacturing industry has proved elusive in Connecticut.

Connecticut’s overall unemployment levels are down from a year ago, but the manufacturing industry lost 1,522 jobs in that time period according a just-published industrial catalog.

From May 2011-12, the industry saw employment drop .7 percent, according to the 2013 Connecticut Manufacturers Register.

"Connecticut still struggles with decreased demand and high business costs," says Tom Dubin, president of Manufacturers’ News, in a press release. "When choosing a location for a new plant, manufacturers look at labor and energy costs, as well as the tax and regulatory burdens. Connecticut often has not been competitive with other states in these areas."

The company looked at 22 states so far, and 70 percent have posted an improvement in manufacturing employment. Connecticut’s industrial workforce totals 201,758 workers and 5,492 different manufacturers.

The three largest segments of the industrial sector are transportation, industrial machinery and equipment and fabricated metals. All but transportation saw a decline in the past year.

Manufacturers’ News did point out several promising developments, such as the “planned establishment of Tronox Inc.'s global headquarters in Stamford; the expected expansion of Alexion Pharmaceuticals in Hartford; the recent merger announcement between Beacon Industries and TECT Power; the expansion of SolarChange LLC; and the opening of a biodiesel plant in Bridgeport.”

The only businesses that Dan Molloy likes are the huge corporations that he gives tax breaks to in the form of "forgiveable" loans -- Swiss Bank, Jackson Labs, NBC Sports, etc. Meanwhile his tax increases are killing small and midsized businesses that are the backbone of this state's economy. Despite his across-the-board tax increases last year, state tax revenues went down and the state is going to have to borrow money to meet its pay its bills by the end of the year. Keep electing those democrats people of Connecticut!!!

IMO, the majority of CT residents work in public sector jobs. Most others working in the private sector travel out of state. Although CT has offered some big companies tax breaks for hiring new worker, it does not necessarily mean that those hired live in CT. If you take a look at some of those towns and cities where manufacturing companies once operated, you will see they now look much like run-down ghost towns. It's tragic. When you create a class war with those who create jobs, this is the result. Focusing on discretional spending and not taking the required steps to spark new jobs with companies is short-sighted and poltically motivated. You cannot lead half a state or nation for that matter. It's a shame that this is the current recipe being followed both at the state and federal levels.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
