[PHOTOS] Stonewall Construction Continues in Freezing Temps

Despite a windchill factor that has sent temperatures to near zero, workers are building a stonewall in downtown Sandy Hook.

A makeshift tent has been set up to help shield workers from the biting cold that has gripped the Northeast, as work continues on the stonewall in the heart of Sandy Hook Village.

The tent's purpose is two-fold: it keeps much of the wind out, thereby keeping workers a bit warmer, and it also helps prevent the concrete from setting too quickly.

The tent — thick plastic nailed to a wooden frame — stretches along Glen Road near the intersection of Church Hill Road, across from Stone River Grill, Demitasse and Newtown Country Mill.

In addition to the stonewall, the project includes the construction of sidewalks and other streetscape improvements on Glen and Riverside roads and Washington Street. A similar project in 2006 has been credited with revitalizing the village's business district, and area business owners expect this second phase to further those efforts.
