Malloy to Tour Sandy Hook Businesses

First Selectman Pat Llodra will host the Governor on a fact-finding walking tour of the neighborhood's business community.

Gov. Dannel Malloy will get a firsthand look at the state of business in Sandy Hook Wednesday, as a guest of First Selectman Pat Llodra and members of Newtown's business community. Llodra will host Malloy on a one-hour walking tour of the business district to speak with shop owners and others about the village's economic recovery since Dec. 14.

"First Selectwoman Pat Llodra, members of SHOP, EDC and staff will accompany Gov. Malloy who is visiting us to see firsthand how Sandy Hook is recovering since the tragic events of Dec. 14, 2012," said Newtown Director of Economic and Community Development Elizabeth Stocker.

Stocker said the town is encouraging as many business owners as possible to be present in their shops for a chance to let Malloy their own experience in the last seven months.

Many Sandy Hook businesses have received at least some help from the state due to the shooting's effect on the neighborhood's economy. In January, Hartford approved a $500,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant to help businesses recover. In May, Llodra said she was "very concerned" about Sandy Hook's business future.

At least two businesses -- Stone River Grille and neighboring cafe Demitasse -- have closed in 2013, with new businesses opening in their place in the past few months.
