Greenwich Avenue to Get Some Culinary Spice

Greenwich's Culinary Landscape to Expand: Chipotle Mexican Grill Coming to Greenwich Avenue.

A little spice will be added to the culinary landscape of Greenwich with the planned opening next month of Chipotle Mexican Grill at the top of Greenwich Avenue.

Workers for Schimenti Construction have been toiling on an "interior fit-out" or a complete gutting of the interior of 49 Greenwich Ave., according to Steve Nickels, Schimenti's project manager overseeing the work. A building permit for the project - estimated to cost $300,000 - was granted by the Greenwich Building Department in January. Nickels could not provide an exact cost estimate.

Nickels said the grand opening is set for "mid-April." However, he could not provide a firm date. An e-mail seeking comment from Chipotle's corporate headquarters in Denver was not answered Tuesday.

The interior work includes seating for 20 to 30 diners and a bar.

According to Chipotle's website, the popular chain was founded in 1993 in Colorado and now has about 1,200 restaurants that feature burritos, tacos, salads, and as with some of the franchises, will offer alcoholic beverages.

The closest Chipotle restaurant is in Rye Brook, NY, in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center.

The rent is too damn high. That's why they are in Norwalk.

Have you talked about Tomatillo on the post road? They are in that row of stores with the car wash near Toyota. Nice decor, fresh tacos, burrittos, the usual Mexican food. It's fresh, the service is good and the price is right. What's not to like?

As well as El Charrito on Apache PL (off Sheephill).

Tomatillo is also opening a second space across the street from the train station on Railroad Ave. Not sure when it'll be open though.
