Fire Chief: Injuries in Wasserman Way Crash Not Life-Threatening [Updated]

Update at 4 p.m.:

Authorities believe the single occupant of an SUV involved in a crash with an unoccupied tour bus did not have life-threatening injuries, according to Fire Chief Ray Corbo.

Corbo said the head-on collision took place about 2:13 p.m. at the intersection of Mile Hill Road and Mile Hill South between the still-unidentified man and the driver of a "Greyhound-style" tour bus.

"He's very, very lucky," Corbo said. "The dashboard was on top of his legs. We removed all the doors, the roof and had to displace the dashboard off his legs."

Corbo said extrication took less than 20 minutes. Roads were temporarily closed following the accident, but were reopened at about 3:30 p.m.

Update at 3 p.m.:

The single occupant of a vehicle involved in the crash was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Newtown Hook and Ladder Fire Chief Ray Corbo did not have the victim's identity, but said it was a man, most likely under 21 years of age.

He estimated that Wasserman Way would be closed for about another 30 minutes. Traffic is being detoured through Fairfield Hills, from Mile Hill to Keating Farms.

Corbo said it appears the man's vehicle collided with a passenger bus, most likely head on. The bus was not carrying passengers at the time.

Due to the extent of the damage, the man had to be extricated from his vehicle. The airbags had deployed, visible as the roof of the vehicle had been cut off.

Original Report:

Wasserman Way is closed between Mile Hill South and the entrance to Fairfield Hills due to an accident.

Emergency crews are on scene. It appears firefighters had to extricate a victim.

More details as they become available.
