Lax in the Rain

We love to watch our kids play, until weather becomes a factor. Here are some of my most memorable.

This past weekend I was lucky enough to attend my son's lacrosse tournament....in Glastonbury....in the rain.

As I stood there with an umbrella in my left hand and a camera in my right, I began wondering which of my sons' many sporting events that I've attended over the years was the least desirable.

There was the time I drove to New Hampshire for soccer tournament in torrential rain only to have the game, and later the tournament, cancelled after 20 minutes of play. No refunds on the hotel room.

How about the travel basketball game in New Haven where only three of the team parents' cars were broken into even though there was someone standing guard in the parking lot?

However, the clear cut winner falls in the category of fall baseball.

Picture this: A cold, crisp, late-October morning. The wind howling through the Spring jacket you chose in lieu of the ski parka you left hanging in the closet because you decided it is too early for Winter.

Two hours after arriving, it is only the third inning. The score is tied 11-11 because neither team's pitcher can throw a strike. You quickly calculate that at this rate, you still have at least 90 minutes of watching kids walk from base to base.

Your bucket-size latte from Starbuck's has worked its way through your system as you debate whether or not you can make it to the porta potty. You start to time the length of the warm up between innings, wondering why they just can't run out there and start.

Then, your worst nightmare is realized. This is the first game of a doubleheader.

Makes me appreciate lax in the rain.
