The final production of Newtown's Town Players' 2013 season is Veronica's Room, a dark drama from Rosemary's Baby author Ira Levin. Opening Friday at the Little Theatre, the play "explores the thin line between fantasy and reality, madness and murder," based around assumed identities and complex plot twists.
Not only is it a change from the Orchard Hill Road-based playhouse's lighter-hearted fare, it marks a directing return for Pam Meister Jones, who also chairs the Little Theatre's Board of Directors.
"We feel a show like this tends to do well in the later part of year," she says. "People think certain times of year are appropriate for certain shows, and it's a spookier time of year. If we have a show like this, we tend to put at the end."
Jones said she was happy with this year's season, which featured critically acclaimed shows but, she said, not as many highly-attended hits as she hopes for.
"This season the big hit was Tom, Dick and Harry," she says. "People love farces. We try to put on something funny that will draw audiences, but w also like to put on an edgy show that gives actors something to sink their teeth into."
Newtown resident Elizabeth Young, who has appeared in community theatre productions throughout Connecticut and New York over the past four years, says she loves coming home for a production.
"It's the community," she says. "It's Newtown. Everyone's nice here."
Veronica's Room opens Friday at the Little Theatre, running 8:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays from Nov. 8 to 30, with 2:00 p.m. matinees Nov. 17 and 24. Tickets are $20. For more information and tickets, visit the Town Players' website.
