Mozart, Merlot and Mums is Held Amidst Tropical Garden

Residents sing the praises of fundraiser for Kevin's Community Center.

Behind their historic home at 50 Main Street sits a hidden treasure, the garden of George and Shane Miller.

The guests who attended Saturday's Mozart, Merlot and Mums fundraiser for Kevin's Community Center, were wined dined and treated to a tour of this surprising tropical garden in the middle of Newtown.

Along with plants that are indigenous to the area, George Miller cares for more than 50 tropical plants including a banana tree that is bearing fruit for the first time this year.  In October Miller digs up the tropical plants and brings them inside for winter.

Sandy Hook Wine and Liquor donated wine for the fundraiser. Members of Opici Wine Co. of Connecticut staffed each of the wine tables and gave descriptions of each of the wines.

Cindy Gallatin, of Newtown, said her favorite part of the day was learning about all of the various wines from the informative representatives. Wine samplings were from California, New York, Argentina and France to name a few.

From Chardonnay to Bordeaux there was something for everyone. To accompany the wine, a wide array of delicious appetizers was supplied by many area restaurants.  Musical performances by Midhat Serbagi, Lidsey Jones, Melissa Westgate, Doug Wahlberg and Michael Conard rounded out the perfect afternoon.

Karen Powell who volunteers as a nurse for Kevin's Community Center said she enjoys helping and that "the people she works with are such a wonderful group of people and the quality of the health care provided at KCC is excellent."

When guests were asked why they attend this event the responses were varied.  Some came for the wine, some for the food and some for the garden tour. Everyone was in agreement, however, that it is a fantastic cause and a great way to spend an afternoon.

Kevin's Community Center is a free medical clinic in Newtown that provides health care for residents who are uninsured or underinsured.KCC was founded in 2002 by Newtown residents Dr. Z. Michael Taweh and his wife in memory of their son Kevin.
