Just four competitions into the 2011 Winter Guard season, the Newtown High School Junior Varsity Color Guard was promoted by the Musical Arts Conference on Monday to compete at the Scholastic A level — two levels higher than last year when they won the Scholastic AAA MAC Winter Guard Championships.

"We are quite proud of these girls, who have progressed this fast to this level, at such a young age," said Bob Findley, who instructs the guard along with Janos Pergely and Varsity Captains Sarah Smith and Nicole Scalora. "It's an impressive accomplishment."

Only four  of the 16 junior varsity members are in high school with the other 12 Newtown Middle School students.

Announcement of the promotion came following the Saturday, Feb. 19 Winter Guard competition at New Milford High School. At the competition, the junior varsity guard won second place out of seven schools, scoring just one point below Trumbull High School.

During the same competition, the Newtown Varsity Winter Guard won first place, scoring 7.2 points  above Bethel and Bunnell High Schools, who tied for second place.

The Newtown Junior Winter Guard took second place, just one point away from rival Bethel, who has won the MAC Junior decision championship for the last several years.

All three divisions of the Newtown High School Winter Guard are under the guidance of Band Director Kurt Eckhardt.
