Children's Day

The Newtown Historical Society will host a Children’s Day at the Little Red School House on the grounds of Middle Gate School on Sunday, September 18, 2011.  In 1968 the society acquired the school house and relocated the structure from its original site on Toll Gate Hill (now Route 25) to its present location.

The public is invited to visit between 10:30am and 12:30pm.  Costumed Docents will conduct “classes” inside the school house for children 5 to 10 years old while recess activities take place outside.  Docents will teach and organize colonial games, such as Graces, Trundling a Hoop, Sack Races, and Tug of War.

Classes will begin promptly at 10:30am and 11:30am and will include a hornbook craft.  In the event of rain, classes will still be held, but outside events will be cancelled.  Admission is free, but donations are welcomed and appreciated.

The Historical Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization.  During the year we offer open houses with living history demonstrations, a lecture series, a summer history camp for kids and many special events.  All funding comes from private donations, membership dues, bequests and fund raisers such as the house and garden tour and publication sales.  New members are always welcome and volunteers are needed to help organize and run our many events!  To join or for more information, please visit our website: www.newtownhistory.org or call the society at 203-426-5937.
