This is Newtown: Town Employees Care

In between pulling files, a town employee puts a smile on my son's face.

My wife and I are in the market for our first home and we have our hearts set on finding the perfect one here in Newtown.

As we narrow down our search I've found myself in Town Hall trying to find out as much information as possible about each of them — doing my due diligence, as my father puts it.

My sister has been doing the same as she and her husband look, too. And both she and I have been so thankful for the helpful and friendly staff in the many departments we've been visiting (health, building, zoning, tax, clerk, etc.).

It's Marie in the Building Department, though, who stands out. And here's why:

While pulling a few files Friday, she grabbed a bright red plastic firefighter helmet and gave it to my 17-month-old son to have. She even picked that 28-pounder up and held him, which was probably a good thing because he just wants to run around and explore everything!

It's just a silly plastic hat, sure. But as we all know, it's the small things that make a big difference — and that say so much about who we are.

And that's why we're hoping to soon join the rest of my family in Sandy Hook in calling this town, Newtown, our home.
