St. Rose of Lima's Carnival: 'Come On Down!'

What makes the St. Rose of Lima Carnival so special this year?

When the carnival kicked off Tuesday night, Patch caught up with St. Rose of Lima Monsignor Robert Weiss at the face-painting tent, where youth group member Stephanie Haas created colorful designs for kids. He said it's a chance for Newtown to enjoy itself and have a little fun.

"This community needs a time to get together and relax," says Monsignor Robert Weiss of St. Rose of Lima. "We've been through a rough six months. It's good to see the young people laughing and smiling."

Rain was in the forecast, but it didn't come Tuesday night -- at least, not while the carnival was underway. Weiss is hoping for good weather: according to the forecast, Newtown could expect rain for the rest of the week.

Hungry? Nightly specials offer fresh food from local restaurants, including pulled pork sandwiches, sausage and peppers and pasta bowls -- Weiss says it's "not your typical carnival food." But standbys like fried dough are still available for the traditional carnival experience.

The carnival continues through Saturday, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. each night. As Weiss says, "Come on out -- it's a great time!"
