Red Cross Offers Tips on Using a Generator

The following is a press release from the Red Cross

  • DO NOT operate a generator inside homes, garages, basements, crawl spaces, sheds, orother partially-enclosed spaces even if using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation.
  • Carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these spaces and can linger for hours, even after the generator is shut down.
  • Operate the equipment ONLY outside and far from windows, doors and vents to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide gas from accumulating and potentially being drawn towards occupied spaces.
  • ALWAYS place a portable generator downwind and point the engine exhaust away from occupied spaces.
  • Shut down the generator when refueling.
  • Always refuel the generator outside your home, garage or shed.
  • Always read and follow the equipment Operator’s Manual before use.
  • Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that could kill you in minutes. You cannot smell it, see it or taste it. Even if you do not smell exhaust fumes, you could still beexposed to carbon monoxide gas.
  • Install battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms or plug-in carbon monoxide alarms with battery back-up according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Smoke alarms do not detect carbonmonoxide gas. If you start to feel sick, dizzy or weak while using the portable generator, shut it off and get to fresh air RIGHT AWAY. See a doctor. You may have carbon monoxide poisoning.

Know the Warning Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning:
The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can be similar to those caused by other illnesses such asa cold, flu or food poisoning. Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning consist of:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Faintness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue

If you suspect that you are experiencing any of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, get to fresh air immediately.

To Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning:

  • Never operate a portable generator or any other gas engine-powered tool in or near anenclosed space.
  • Install a CO alarm that meets the current UL2034 safety standard.
  • A CO alarm can provide added protection, but it is no substitute to proper use and upkeep ofyour generator.

Town Clerk Aurelia is already causing the town to needlessly spend money defending her derelictionRead More of duty: "An attorney representing the town, with the law firm Cohen and Wolf, issued an opinion in response to the, (New York), Post's request stating that the public is only allowed to view death and marriage certificates that are "at least one hundred years old." Cost aside she is pushing for a state law that would restrict access to a minors birth certificate for 6 months, she originally wanted them sealed for 10 years. The only thing the proposed law is going to accomplish is the healing that has been accomplished is going to be undone when the seal expires. This is much ado about nothing. http://www.newstimes.com/local/article/Newtown-officials-withhold-death-certificates-4526713.php

While I have no desire to view any of these death certificates, the law is the law. I have neverRead More viewed a death certificate, I doubt there is anything listed beyond the name of the decedent, dates of birth & death, parentage, and cause of death. Town Clerk Aurelia is clearly in violation of her oath of office. Her job is not to be administered based on feelings. In doing this she is opening the town up to F.O.I. violations, potential litigation, and fanning the flames of the crazy conspiracy theories. To quote the article, "we feel its an extreme invasion of privacy for these families." Should someone take this to F.O.I. or put it before a judge the town will lose. Do your job as required by statute.

Exactly why do you need to read these reports Elmer Davis? The cause of death was gunshot wounds.Read More Why do you need more than that, and why do you feel your curiosity for details outweigh the need for privacy? I agree with Aurelia and support her. You're acting like the Connecticut Council on Freedom is a government agency. It is a non-profit foundation and the quote from James Smith is only an opinion. It certainly does NOT carry any more weight than anyone else's, including mine, the victim's families, and the vast majority of decent people living in this town.
