Police Will Run Special Olympics Torch Through Newtown

The Connecticut Special Olympics torch will be paying a visit to Newtown Friday, thanks to the efforts of Newtown Police and Garner Correctional staff, as part of the 2013 Law Enforcement Torch Run.

According to police, at about 11:15 a.m. the Bethel Police Dept. will hand the torch off to Newtown at the Dodgingtown Fire House. Police and Garner Correctional will carry the torch down Sugar Street and Glover Ave. before reaching Queen Street. Runners will turn on Church Hill Road and head to Blue Colony, where they will hand the torch to Connecticut State Police Troop A.

Several Newtown businesses -- Newtown Sunoco, Pub 25, Holy Cow Ice Cream and Salon Michel -- have supported the torch run's "adopt a mile" program, according to police.

The torch run will continue into Hartford, where runners will "come together for a celebratory wrap-up of the day's events," according to the Special Olympics, then into New Haven.

The 2013 Special Olympics Summer Games will be hosted this year by Southern Connecticut State University. For more information, see the Connecticut Special Olympics website.
