New Animal Shelter Opens Monday

The dogs have been moved and just need to settle in before they are ready to greet the public.

The first dog, Sunny, joined First Selectman Pat Llodra in celebrating the first day for dogs at the new animal shelter, located at the end of Trades Lane.

Sunny took the tour, nervous at first, but Kennel Keeper Matt Schaub kept a steady hand on the leash.  Llodra and Carolee Mason, joined by Public Works Director Fred Hurley, came in after and marveled at the "first class" building that still has a punch list of minor odds and ends to complete.

The building will officially open to the public on Monday and will also house cats.  The dogs are seen to their best advantage in the new building and there are a couple of dogs that would make excellent pets.

Visit the photo gallery and see the new building at the end of Trades Lane, located behind the Governor's Second Horse Guard, and the happy reactions of the new residents.

Thank you for the article about the opening of our new pound. I'm a volunteer at the pound, and I beg to differ with the author when she comments that there are "a couple of dogs that would make excellent pets". Every dog in that pound would make an excellent pet ... in the right home. If they have issues that make them a little more difficult in one way or another, consider how they ended up there - oftentimes through abandonment, abuse and neglect. Love and patience cures that! Personally, I love them all!

I'm not a dog owner but I'm proud and very happy we have such a state of the art facility. Can't wait to see the dogs enjoy the new dog run. When will that be done?

Is there a website or a contact email of someone at the shelter that I can contact? I would love to help out. Thanks!

@Jackie zVon, As I Was reading the article, I myself was a bit "put off" by the same comment! Every animal, Cat,Dog, Giraffe....Whatever, Has Personality quirks as do humans! I hope she prints a retraction or apoligizes for that statement! Such a thought put into peoples heads could lead to Non-adoption! Shame on Her!
