Mailbox Holds Special Significance For Newtown Man

If you live or work in Newtown, chances are you've driven by Gabor Hajzer's mailbox and remarked how unique it is.

The mailbox is held by a giant micrometer, just as it has been for more than 20 years, at the end of Hajzer's driveway on Berkshire Road -- right next to Newtown High School.

Why a micrometer, and what exactly is one anyway, you may be wondering.

Hajzer, the owner of G&H Tool Company, Inc., explains, "For the tool and die maker the number one instrument is the micrometer."

It's like scissors to a hair stylist or a measuring tape to a contractor, he says.

So the mailbox is a fitting symbol for this man and his home-based business, which manufactures parts for aerospace companies, nuclear power plants, and even for the town's iconic flagpole after it was hit by a truck about a month ago.

Hajzer immigrated to the U.S. from Hungary in 1972 and started his business in 1980. He's lived on Berkshire Road since 1984.

He and his wife, Monika, moved here for the beautiful natural surroundings, the top-notch school system and because people are so nice. They raised their two sons Michael and David here.

And that mailbox has been with them throughout the years. It has been knocked down a few times when plows push heavy snow off the road, but Hajzer has always put it back up, and he vows that it will remain there for many years to come.
