'Last Gorgeous Days' Of Farmers Market's 2013 Season Approach

Another autumn, another cold afternoon as the Newtown Farmers' Market prepares to wind down.

Just two more markets are left after today, as a handful of vendors -- including Shortt's Farm and Waldingfield Farm -- stick it out among the falling leaves.

Billy Fellows of Topaz Farm calls out to patrons for "the last lemonade of the season." He's going to California, but he'll be back for the final 2013 market on Oct. 29.

"This was the last gorgeous day of the lemonade season," he says.

It was the first year for Biscotti, Etc., a business launched by Sandy Hook mom Stephanie Schneiderman.

"It was a very good year," she says. "And a beautiful summer for the market, other than beginning half where we had a lot of rain. Of course, it's starting to slow down now with the cool weather."

Schneiderman says she's built a good rapport with other vendors and patrons.

"We've developed quite a following," she says. "People come back every week and buy a lot of biscotti."

She says she plans to return to the market next year; in the meantime, she'll sell her biscotti online and at local restaurants, including My Place.

The Farmers' Market runs from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Tuesdays at Fairfield Hills.
