Still River Greenway Day

Bring your family down to the Still River Greenway in Danbury on June 4th for a day full of fun and exciting outdoor activities!

The Still River Alliance is excited to invite the public to attend the 2011 Still River Greenway Day celebration on Saturday, June 4th from 9:00a until 3:00p along the Still River Greenway in Danbury.   In addition, prior to the event, in participation with the Danbury Walk for Health Event and National Trails Day, Alliance volunteers will lead an 8:00a “Early Bird Hike” along the greenway.

  • *8:00am “Early Bird Hike” led by Alliance volunteers
  • “River Critters,” an interactive  water quality workshop presented by the Housatonic Valley Association
  • “Hawks & Owls,” a presentation of live raptors by the Sharon Audubon Society
  • African drumming and dance with Ase-AmenRa Kariamu and friends
  • Kayaking demonstrations by Eastern Mountain Sports
  • Interpretive greenway tours led by Alliance volunteers
  • Fly fishing demonstrations performed by members of the Candlewood Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited
  • A digital photo competition for attendees supported by volunteers from Danbury High School, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes sponsored by Veolia Water
  • “What’s a Watershed?” hands-on activity for children presented by the Sierra Club
  • Guided bird walks led by Wild Birds Unlimited staff
  • And more! 

 

The celebration, which is scheduled to run from 9:00a until 3:00p on Saturday, June 4th, will be held at the Still River Greenway entrance, which is located behind the Kimchuck Corporation building at 1 Corporate Drive (off Eagle Road) in Danbury, CT.  Programs will be held throughout the day along the 2-mile greenway.  This year’s event is being held in conjunction with the Danbury-wide Walk for Health event as well as the 2011 National Trails Day event.

 

Other upcoming Still River Alliance events include a river cleanup in collaboration with IBM and the Housatonic Valley Association on June 15th and the Annual Candlewood Lake Canoe and Kayak Race on September 25th.

The Still River Alliance, formed in 1995, is a partnership of individuals, organizations, and public agencies dedicated to the stewardship of the Still River and the river’s greenway system, and to the continued improvement of the environment of the surrounding watershed. 

 

Current Alliance steering committee members include the Housatonic Valley Association, Danbury Conservation Commission, Danbury Health Department, Danbury Parks & Recreation, Sierra Club, Branson Ultrasonics, Still River Cleanup, Candlewood Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited, King's Mark, CT Department of Environmental Protection, Danbury Public School System, Housatonic Valley Paddle Club, Veolia Water North America, and citizens from the watershed municipalities.
