Eichler's Cove Beach is closed, and will be until at least Saturday, Donna Culbert, Director of Health at the Newtown Department of Health, told Patch.

The Department of Health samples the water quality at the beach every week and found this week that the water did not meet their standards.

"This happens every once in a while after large thunderstorms," Culbert explained to Patch. "They created a lot of run-off this week."

Culbert says another water sample was taken today and she is hopeful it will be of a higher quality, so the beach may re-open. The sample takes a day to process, however, so the earliest the beach can re-open is be Saturday.

"It's disappointing, but not necessarily surprising," said Culbert.

Check in with Patch for further developments.

Does "Beach closed at least through Thursday" mean just today? Or through next Thursday?

Sounds like a bit more than bacteria issues

"until further notice" - does not sound good! Hope that Newtown Parks and Recreation Department can be a bit more pro-active in keeping the town informed.

They did provide a reason. Bad water quality which probably means high bacteria from the storm. I'd rather they close it then let people swim in it.
