Countdown to the Parade: Road Closures, Fair, Times

The rescheduled Labor Day parade has many changes this year. Make sure you know all of them.

The rescheduled Labor Day parade starts at 2 p.m. but be sure to get to your seats early.

1:45 p.m.: all of the roads will be closed.

1:45 p.m.: Unfurling of the giant Nation's Flag at the Main Street flagpole.

2:15 p.m.: Unfurling of the flag at the grand stand on Queen Street.

If you get to the area early, check out this year's newest addition to the parade, a fair that will start at 10 a.m. on the front lawn of the Newtown Middle School.

The fair will feature businesses, such as Newtown-
based 
“Romy’s
 BBQ,” which 
will 
be offering 
pork
 shish
 kebabs,
 hot
dogs,
 and
 hamburgers,
 fried
 dough,
 soda 
and 
water
. Handmade
 crafts,
 local 
businesseses, 
non‐profits 
and 
direct 
sales 
companies, 
The 
Newtown
 Cultural
 Arts 
Commission also 
will
 be
 giving 
information
 on 
the 
Arts
 Contest 
for 
“The
Arts
Fest,” 
scheduled
 for 
September
 2012. GMS
 Rowing, of 
New
Milford, also 
will 
be 
there 
with
 one 
of 
its crew

Road closures this year will be the same as last with the exception that the closures will be about 15 minutes before the step-off.

The following roads will be closed:

  • Route 25/Mount Pleaseant Road south from its intersection with Reservoir Road
  • Main Street at Academy Lane, Currituck Road, Hanover Road, School House Hill Road and West Street
  • Church Hill Road west from its intersection with The Boulevard
  • Route 302/Sugar Street at Elm Drive
  • Route 25/Main Street north from its intersection at Elizabeth Street
  • Queen Street north from its intersection at Elizabeth Street

The road closures will be in effect until about 4 p.m.

The following roads will have no parking

  • The Boulevard from Church Hill to School House Hill roads
  • School House Hill Road from The Boulevard to Main Street
  • Hanover Road from Main Street to Hall Lane
  • Elm Drive from Route 302 to Hawley Road
  • Meadow Road and Elizabeth Street will have no parking on one side only.
