Cheer Team Needs Help Traveling to Nationals

Cheerleaders are holding fundraisers in their bid to travel to Florida and compete in the national championships.

The Newtown Nighthawks D15 Cheer Team are headed to Orlando, FL to compete in the 2011 AYC National Championships next week.

The team placed second Sunday, at the 2011 AYC Northeast Regional Championships in Worchester, MA, which advances them to the national competition Dec. 10.

To help defray the costs of the trip, the cheerleaders and their friends and family will be hosting a variety of fundraising events, starting Tuesday, Nov. 29 when the girls cheerfully greeted shoppers at spots, such as Ace Hardware, Nina Nails and Salon Michele.

Contributions to the team also can be deposited into decorated donation cans, which have been placed at various businesses throughout town.

On Sat., Dec. 3, the cheerleaders and their winning smiles will be at the Newtown Youth Academy from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., and downtown at the Sandy Hook Tree Lighting beginning 4 p.m.

Also, on Mon., Dec. 5, My Place restaurant will be hosting a “Support Newtown Cheer” fundraiser, starting at 5 p.m., during which the eatery is generously donating 20-percent of its sales to the team. This applies to eat-in and take-out. Be sure to mention the Newtown Nighthawks Cheer Team.

The team would like to thank My Place for its continued involvement in our community.

The cheerleaders are coached by Susan Bridges and assistant coaches Lori Rohrbacher and Chris Hughes. Demonstrators are Meredith Bridges, Madalyn Petrovich and Samantha Rohrbacher.

The cheerleaders are Chloe Amante, Sarah Bender, Madeline Bridges, Anna Buzzanca, Jamie Calandro, Carolyn Del Rossi, Madison Duffy, Madalene Gelinas, Celia Gold, Emma Horne, Lindsay Hoyt, Laken Hughes, Kayla Kordish, Samantha Lotko, Danielle Mola, Julia Monaco, Christina Moore, Jessica Mullany, Julianna Patelli, Jacqueline Sgobbo, Kayla Sippin, Lindsay Skalkos, Laura Sullivan, Julia Wiberg, Nicole Zaccaro and Elizabeth Zambernardi.

To further support my support of Aurelia, the letter above states it was the New York Post thatRead More wanted the details. Good for you town clerk! I goggled the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information and they are indeed nothing more than a non-profit group. They are not a government agency. And an inept one - their own website is a mess. What clowns.- http://ctcouncilfoi.org/

Town Clerk Aurelia is already causing the town to needlessly spend money defending her derelictionRead More of duty: "An attorney representing the town, with the law firm Cohen and Wolf, issued an opinion in response to the, (New York), Post's request stating that the public is only allowed to view death and marriage certificates that are "at least one hundred years old." Cost aside she is pushing for a state law that would restrict access to a minors birth certificate for 6 months, she originally wanted them sealed for 10 years. The only thing the proposed law is going to accomplish is the healing that has been accomplished is going to be undone when the seal expires. This is much ado about nothing. http://www.newstimes.com/local/article/Newtown-officials-withhold-death-certificates-4526713.php

While I have no desire to view any of these death certificates, the law is the law. I have neverRead More viewed a death certificate, I doubt there is anything listed beyond the name of the decedent, dates of birth & death, parentage, and cause of death. Town Clerk Aurelia is clearly in violation of her oath of office. Her job is not to be administered based on feelings. In doing this she is opening the town up to F.O.I. violations, potential litigation, and fanning the flames of the crazy conspiracy theories. To quote the article, "we feel its an extreme invasion of privacy for these families." Should someone take this to F.O.I. or put it before a judge the town will lose. Do your job as required by statute.
