Boy Scouts Join in Flag Day Tradition

As the sun set, boy scouts assisted in a flag day ritual at Newtown's VFW post 308 -- lowering and retiring the flag outside the post on Freedom Defender's Way and hoisting a new flag in its place.

This was the first year boy scouts had joined the ceremony, and the first year a state representative -- Rep. Mitch Bolinsky -- joined, according to commander James Rebman.

Flag Day -- June 14 -- is a day to commemorate the history and meaning of America's stars and stripes. As VFW members shredded and burned the old flag in accordance with U.S. flag code, Rebman read a selection of patriotic quotes from American history.
