12-Year-Old Newtown Boy Volunteers For Kids

He says he loves seeing them happy, especially after everything they've been through since the shooting at Sandy Hook School.

While kids had a blast sledding at Treadwell Park on Christmas Eve, one 12-year-old was busy breaking down boxes, handing out panda bears and showing children where to get munchkins and hot chocolate.

Joshua Bent looks like your typical seventh grader from Newtown Middle School. He even came to the park on Monday morning wearing snow pants and boots, ready to sled. But instead of joining the other kids when they took to the hill, Joshua stayed near the adults, helping do whatever was needed. Sporting a smile, he broke down empty cardboard boxes and handed out panda bears to kids.

"I love doing this stuff," he said. "I love seeing the kids sledding and seeing their smiles. I love seeing them so happy."

Joshua was at Treadwell Park for a Snow Angel event, which actually had been postponed since the organizers could not make enough snow in time.

Despite the last-minute postponement, many families still came and had a fun time. That was exactly the intent organizers had in mind, to try and replace sadness with smiles, even for a few minutes, in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting that killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook School, which is just up the street from the park.

With that in mind, Joshua was happy to help out.

"I love volunteering my time," he said. "I'm just so grateful that I'm OK."

Josh:
You are an inspiration and a wonderful example of a thoughtful, loving and caring young man. Your kindness was surely noticed, appreciated and admired by all the families personally affected by this tragedy and the community as a whole. Prayers and thoughts continue for everyone there. .

You have so much to teach Josh. Being an example is the best way and you're a great example of making others more important than yourself. Keep up the good work and you'll have a satisfying and fulfilling life. God bless you and all of Newtown.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
