Make A New Year's Resolution to Address Venous Disease

A new year brings new opportunities to improve one’s health and well-being for the better, and the Vein Institute of Connecticut is reminding residents who suffer from venous disease to consider beginning a vein treatment plan that best fits their needs.

Vein disease encompasses conditions related to or caused by veins that become diseased or abnormal such as varicose veins or spider veins, to name a few.  Unsightly, symptomatic veins affect an estimated 15-20 percent of the adult population.

“While mild venous disease does not immediately pose a problem for patients, as it worsens, it can become crippling chronic venous insufficiency,” said Dr. Alex Afshar, Connecticut’s leading vein expert and a board certified physician at the Vein Institute of Connecticut.  “In addition, we realize that this also affects a person’s well-being, and how they feel about themselves, and so our goal is to provide first-class minimally invasive medical treatment with first-class cosmetic outcomes.”

Signs and symptoms of a vein disorder include:

  • Leg pain, aching, or cramping
  • Burning or itching of skin
  • Leg or ankle swelling
  • “Heavy” and tired feeling in the legs
  • Skin discoloration/changes
  • Restless Leg Syndrome

“More than 24 million Americans have vein disease, and although these cannot be prevented, they can certainly be treated,” Afshar added. “In the New Year, it’s important for men and women with vein disorders to understand their symptoms and take charge of their care in order to obtain a healthier lifestyle. Our priority is both patient health and well-being”
