Home Energy Solutions Participation Results in $10K Donation to Fuel Bank

On Thursday, August 15, the Newtown Fuel Bank was presented a check for $10,025 as a result of resident participation in the Home Energy Solutions℠ (HES) program. The donation will be used to help Newtown residents with energy-related financial assistance during the heating season.

HES is a convenient home energy improvement service provided by CL&P, UI and the natural gas utilities as part of the Energize Connecticut initiative. The program is designed to help people save money on their monthly energy bills. For those who sign up, utility-authorized energy specialists come to your home or apartment and install energy-efficient products and perform weatherization services. The cost for HES is $75 for homes heating with electricity or natural gas, $99 for homes heated with fuel oil and propane, and is free for those who meet income eligibility guidelines.

Beginning in April 2012 three energy vendors - Victory Energy Solutions of New Britain, Energy PRZ of Brookfield and HE-Energy Solutions of Stratford – agreed to donate $50 for each of the first 100 homes to sign up and $25 for each home after that.

Thursday’s check presentation was held at Nunnawauk Meadows, a private living community for senior citizens. Each of the apartments within the complex participated in the HES program.

Local leaders, legislators and representatives from CL&P attended the event, including Joseph Borst from the Newtown Energy Conservation Committee; Mark Sievel from the Newtown Sustainable Energy Commission; Cathy Quinn, Chairperson of the Newtown Energy Task Force; Linda Manganaro, Executive Director of Nunnawauk Meadows; State Representative DebraLee Hovey, 112th District; Ann Benore from Newtown Social Services; Raquel Kennedy of Victory Energy; Vivian Perez of Handyman Express – Energy Solutions; Robert Neal, President of Energy PRZ; Diana McCarthy-Bercury of CL&P and Marge Kelly of CL&P.
