Community Corner

Congregation Adath Israel will be open on 12/14/2013

Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown, located at 115 Huntingtown Road, announces its ongoing calendar of events marking the Anniversary of 12/14/12.

On Saturday December 14th the synagogue will be open as a gathering place from 1:00-4:00 pm. Come spend the afternoon, and bring your children too. The entire greater Newtown community is invited. There will be a free spread of refreshments available in our social hall. Adath Israel is a synagogue for all people. The synagogue premises will be secured as a media free zone for the entire weekend.

Our Sanctuary will be open for anyone who wishes to enter for silent prayer, contemplation, meditation, or quiet conversation. There will be a separate supervised children’s area for arts and crafts and comfort throughout the afternoon. From 3:00-4:00 pm, COMFORT THERAPY DOGS will be visiting for all to cuddle with. There will also be clergy, social workers, and psychologists available should anyone feel moved to speak with a professional. These can be informal group discussions or private individual sessions. Any such conversations will be held in strict confidence.

On Friday evening December 13th the Congregation will hold its regular Friday evening Sabbath service from 7:30-8:45 pm. The service will have as its focus: Committing to Acts of Kindness and Service to Others. All are welcome to join us for this service that will be followed by an hour of fellowship and schmoozing over a delicious spread of food.

In the Jewish spirit of giving Charity, and in line with First Selectwoman Pat Llodra’s request that Anniversary events focus on Acts of Kindness and Service to Others, there is a collection box in the synagogue foyer to support the ongoing rescue efforts in the Phillipines following the devastating typhoon that occurred there last month.

A traditional Jewish memorial service was held previously, on Saturday December 7th, following the Hebrew calendar for the Anniversary. There will not be a service on 12/14.
