Every year, as a volunteer for Soldiers Angels, myself along with my two grandsons with help of other friends and family, conduct a drive for socks for our deployed military men and women. This was not just some bright idea I came up with. It is one of the most requested items from soldiers and a choice I make to work on every year. Our soldiers often spend weeks at a time wearing the same socks without the benefit of laundering. They don't have Walmart or Sears to run in to buy new socks. They are not stationed at a fancy hotel with concierge services. They don't have washer-dryer units in the barren, dirty places they are forced to live in. Yet, again I find myself begging on behalf of these selfless men and women for a pair of socks. I wish I didn't have to ask for anything for them. I wish they were all home safely with their families, but they're not. I feel incredibly lucky to live in a country where I am protected day and night by the greatest military services in the world. Surely you can feel some responsibility to them. I had a tremendous turn out last year and was able to ship 3,000 pair. This year, with the (expired) deadline of November 26, I have a grand total of 40 pairs. Newtown, I know you can do better than that. Perhaps the next time you get dressed and slip on that nice clean pair of socks or maybe as you are folding that warm laundry, fresh out of the dryer, you will think of them. And when you do, if you have a clear conscience, then I envy you. I am going to push the deadline to December 10 because I have confidence that Newtown will come through again. If you find it in your heart to donate, there is a box on my front porch at 77 Butterfield Road in Newtown. You can drop the socks there or you can call 203-948-0584 to arrange for us to pick them up. We need men's and women's socks in white, black or olive green in adult sizes. I'm only asking for a pair of socks. If you can give more that's great. But just one pair....please think of our men and women stationed far from home. Trust me, they are thinking of and counting on you. Thank you. Joanne Brunetti
