The Newtown High School Baseball team won an exciting game Wednesday afternoon 7-6 in New Milford. Newtown was trailing New Milford 4-3 entering the top of the 7th inning. Newtown seniors Evan Nonan and Andy Kelley both walked to start the inning, followed by a Kyle Wilcox single down the left field line. The next batter was junior pinch hitter J.P Blanco who hit a 2-1 pitch over the left fielders head for a 2 RBI single, giving the Nighthawks the lead. Newtown would add 2 more runs, one on an RBI single by Junior Justin DeVellis, his second hit of the day and one on a New Milford past ball. Newtown was led on the mound by Mike Davis who went 5 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs, striking out 6 and walking none. Brandon Marks came on in relief and struck out the only batter he faced. Seniors John Hull and Kyle Wilcox combined to pitch the 7th inning and finish the game as Wilcox struck out 2 to seal the Nighthawk win. Senior captain Rich Sandler had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s, David Lucia, Mike Allwein, and Evan Noonan also had hits in the win. Newtown is now 14-5 overall and 10-3 in SWC play. Newtown closes out the season with Pomperaug Thursday in a non conference game in Middlebury; game time is 4:15.
