Review: King's

Bring your appetite

Breakfast is my favorite meal. So I was looking forward to visiting King's, a restaurant that specializes in breakfast and lunch. I first discovered this spot more than 12 years ago when it was called Leo's. And I was hooked.

King's has more than just traditional breakfast fare. Although on the expensive side, the dishes here are creative and reliable, with heaping portions. On the day of our recent visit, I tried the Johnny Apple Seed French Toast ($9.95). Six halves of thick, egg-dipped French toast arrived, hidden under a pile of freshly cooked apples and slathered in delicious syrup. The size of that breakfast conquered me before I even began eating, but the strong black coffee provided a good balance for the meal's sweetness.

My son ordered the Belgian Waffle with Strawberries ($7.95). The waffle was crispy and hot, with plenty of large fresh strawberries tucked under a mound of whipped cream. A testament to the flavor of the waffles, my son said he didn't want any syrup.

Our third dish was the Mystic Melt ($12.95), scrambled eggs with fresh lump crabmeat (no imitation crab here), asparagus and cheese. This dish came with home fries and grilled bread. My friend enjoyed the eggs and had me try the special Bocco bread. This flat, circular bread was brushed with butter, grilled then sliced into wedges. Yum. It was crispy and tasty, needing no jam or extra butter.

Other specials on the board included the Blues Brothers (blueberry French toast and blueberry pancakes in a blueberry cream sauce; $9.95) and the Monterey Omelet (an omelet stuffed with avocado, cheese, tomatoes and chicken; $10.95). There is a kids' menu, which unfortunately my kids have graduated from, and pancakes ordered for the kids arrive shaped and decorated to resemble Mickey Mouse.

Our food arrived quickly, but don't expect warm and fuzzy service here. The waitresses are busy and bring you what you need when they get to it.

King's is a small spot, where you will find many locals either with their families or meeting friends. The walls in the main dining room are decorated with photos of famous cowboys, and the larger dining room has the rustic feel of an enclosed front porch. Children are welcome here, but be prepared to wait on the weekends. King's does not take credit cards but accepts cash and personal checks. On Tuesdays, the restaurant offers a discount to seniors.
