Newtown Spared Brunt of Presidents Day Snowfall

Snow falls across the region early this morning but is expected to taper off by noon.

About an inch of snow had fallen in Newtown -- with 3 inches or more just south of the area -- as of 5:30 a.m. Presidents Day.

By about mid morning, snowfall totals were only about 2 inches, sparing Newtown the 4 to 5 inches that fell in parts of southern Fairfield County. The storm was forecasted to end by about noon, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm was part of a low pressure system that moved in from the west, Upton, N.Y.-based meteorologist Lauren Nash said.

“It’s almost coming directly from the south,” she said.  “The low pressure center is south of Long Island but we’re still going to be affected by it.”

The snow started during the overnight hours and will continue to fall moderately as the sun rises, the weather service said.

The temperature as of about 6 a.m. was 25-degrees at Reed Intermediate School and is expected to rise to close to freezing as the day progresses. It was 28 degrees as of 11 a.m.

Another storm, which will start as rain and turn to snow, is in the forecast for Thursday night into Friday, but the chance of that storm is at about 40 to 50-percent at this point.

“It looks like it’s going to be light snow and rain but that track can change,” Nash said.

With Monday being Presidents Day, morning traffic is expected to be light due to the holiday. Here are a list of closings:

  • public schools
  • post offices, which also means no U.S. mail delivery
  • federal, state and town offices
  • C.H. Booth Library

Editor's note: Three inches of snow had fallen in the region as of early this morning, although Newtown specifically appeared to have received only about an inch. This article has since been updated with weather conditions.
