Officials Close in on Cause of Winslow Road Fire
A lawn tractor suspected of causing a house fire is a model that has had issues in the past, the deputy fire marshal says.
The deputy fire marshal and a second fire investigator were expected back at 1 Winslow Road Monday to look into the cause of a blaze that broke out the day before in a garage and spread throughout most of the house.
A tractor, which had been used to mow and mulch the lawn only moments before the fire broke out at about 3:30 p.m., Sunday , is suspected of being behind the cause of the blaze, officials said.
The tractor, a Cub Cadet LT-1042, was purchased in 2007 from Newtown Power Equipment on Mount Pleasant Road, according to Deputy Fire Marshal Rich Frampton.
That tractor model apparently has had service issues in the past, specifically with the valve cover gaskets leaking oil onto the muffler, Frampton said, adding investigators were not sure at this point whether the tractor involved in the fire exhibited that problem.
Meanwhile, the town's building official also was expected to pay the site a visit to post a notice declaring the structure uninhabitable. The blaze caused significant damage to the split-level home and electricity has been turned off to the residence.
Residents Lazaro Gonzalez and Stephanie Ryan were home at the time the fire broke out and initially tried to extinguish the blaze but the fire quickly grew out of control, officials said. The couple and their children had lived at the house for about six years, Gonzalez said.

I just want to clarify so there are no misunderstandings…
Newtown Power Equipment sold the tractor but no problems or issues were ever brought to their attention concerning this tractor so, they have never worked on the mower.
Newtown Power Equipment is a community business that I personally look to for my power equipment needs. I have bought power equipment, parts and relied on them for maintenance on my equipment. I will continue to patronize this great local business and highly recommend them for their great service, equipment and being an asset to our community.

I have known everyone at Newtown Power Equipment even before there was Newtown Power Equipment..They are honest, and dependable. If any recall existed, the customer would have been notified.
The problem with the tractor if that is the cause may be as simple as having parked a machine with a hot engine (just mowed lawn) in garage that might have been touching something combustible...the engine is after all exposed. Doubt there is much left of the machine to do any cause diagnosis anyway...at least nobody injured!!!
