Financial Report Offers Peek at Town Data

The recently released financial report has many data points that may be of interest.

The town's recently released Annual Financial Report is 127 pages long with a treasure trove of information, which have led officials to say they are pleased with Newtown's financial situation.

As of June 30, 2011, the town's combined net assets totaled about $206 million with an unassigned fund balance of $7.4 million or 7.2 percent of of its bugetary expenditures.

Instead of a list of mind-numbing financials, below are some statistics gleaned from the report – produced by the – that many people may not know but find interesting about the town.

For instance, the real estate, vehicles and personal property in the town is estimated to have a value of nearly $5 billion. (It's assessed by the town at nearly $4 billion.)

Also, apparently more than half of the population is believed to hold a bachelor's or more advanced college degree. Most residents apparently work in Fairfield or Westchester (NY) counties, however the town has an unemployment rate of nearly 7-percent, according to the financial report.

The report also said the Big Y supermarket is the 10th largest employer in town with 151 workers compared to the Board of Education, which at nearly 800 workers is the largest employer, followed by Masonicare at 315.
