Firefighters Respond to Structure Fire at Barn Near Newtown Center

Firefighters responded to a fire at the barn near the intersection of Main Street and Schoolhouse Hill Road.

All Newtown fire companies responded to a structure fire at a barn in Newtown Center this afternoon near the intersection of Route 25 and Schoolhouse Hill Road. No one was present or harmed in the fire. Dispatchers say they received the call at 12:34 p.m.

"It was fully involved upon arrival," said Newtown Hook and Ladder Chief Jason Rivera. "The structure is a total loss. The homeowner has contracted a company to come and tear down the rest, because it's been deemed unsafe by the building department."

Rivera said the fire started inside the barn, but firefighters battled the blaze from the exterior due to a threat of collapse.

In total, Rivera said, four Hook and Ladder units responded alongside units from across Newtown. A Southbury truck responded, but were turned back before they arrived.
